He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and a pioneer who came west to the Iowa Territory. He and his wife settled in newly-formed Jackson County, raised a son and farmed until he died in 1878 at age 88 and was buried in the family plot on the farm north of Andrew.

The tombstone turned up recently in a garage in Indianola. The family members attended a program presented by Don Wentworth, Jackson County Historical Society volunteer, on the discovery of the tombstone at the May 17 "brown bag lunch" at the Clinton Engines Museum.
